Russian Bay, Poros, Greece

Russian Bay
Russian Bay

On Friday, we left Zea Marina near Athens and traveled to Russian Bay on the island of Poros. The passage wasn't that far, taking only a few hours, but we feel like we traveled a long ways from the big city. The bay is deep and it took us a couple of tries to get safely anchored.

We have spent time swimming, reading, and relaxing. We have been busy the entire time since we arrived in Greece and everyone was ready for some slower times. On the beach are some ancient walls that look like they are just about to fall down. People line the beach and the dock and there is a cafe behind the building serving cold drinks.

I took the dinghy and visited a small island next to the anchorage. I have watched as numerous local boats have motored out from the town of Poros to visit the island. I wonder what makes it so appealing.

When I arrive I discover that there is a church on the island and as it is Sunday the church is open. Several of the local families are still on the island; many of them are having an outdoor Sunday barbeque.

The church is quiet and cool inside -- quite a contrast to the 35C temperatures outside. The marble floors contrast nicely with the blue painted archway. Everywhere I look there are lots of fresh flowers. The entire church is spotlessly clean -- someone spends a lot of time and attention keeping this isolated church looking its best.

Dinner
Dinner in the Cockpit

I feel at peace after my visit to the island and its church. The entire family goes swimming -- the first time all five of us have been in the water at the same time this year. I make lamb curry, one of our favourites, for dinner and we sit outside in the warm evening air as the setting sun baths our meal in its golden light.
