Last Day in Siracusa, Sicily

Streets
Narrow streets just above the quay

We have really enjoyed our stay in Siracusa, but after a few windy days the weather forecast is looking better. We want to make our way from Sicily to Malta before heading to Tunisia for the winter. We took time today to wander around the narrow streets of Ortigia, the old town of Siracusa. Ortigia was originally an island when the city was first founded by the Greeks, but the Greeks soon built a bridge over the small river to join it with the mainland. There is a special feel to the old city, surrounded as we are by buildings that date back to the 7th century.

We have many pictures of Siracusa which you can see by selecting the link below. Use your back button to return here when you are finished looking at our Siracusa pictures.

As the sun set, we enjoyed our last meal on the quay on the waterfront. For tourists to stay in Ortigia, they have to pay for very expensive hotels. For boat travelers like ourselves, we've stayed on the waterfront for almost a week and not had to pay for a thing. It is one of the special things about boating -- you often get to tie up right in the middle of town. After exploring the western and eastern coasts of Italy, Siracusa has been a wonderful place for us to wave a fond farewell to Italy as we move on to new adventures.
