Provence Day Four: Roussillon

Roussillon

After visiting the Ochre Museum, we traveled to Roussillon for lunch. Throughout our week in Provence, lunches were spectacular. If you think of Provence for its cooking, you probably think of country food. Simple food, with fantastic fresh flavors that reflect the countryside through which you have walked. We could do the entire walk again, just to have another taste of all of those lunches. It was a good thing that we were walking ten miles a day, since we needed that much exercise to walk of the food that we were eating.


Ochre Quarry

The Ochre Museum that we visited was once a working factory. One of the major suppliers of ochre to the factory was located at Roussillon. After lunch, we visited the quarry to get a first-hand view of the many colors of ochre. Like the Ochre Museum, the quarry was once a going concern, but now it only provides a place for the rest of us to imagine the past.
