October 21: Chhomrong to Bamboo
An early morning rainfall, unusual for the time of year, kept us in our tents first thing in the morning. Once the rain stopped, we had breakfast and got ready for the day. From Chhomrong, we walked down a long flight of steps into the bottom of a valley. After crossing the river at the valley bottom it was time for a long pull uphill. By lunch time we were in Sinua, having gone down and up a thousand meters with a net zero change in elevation. In fact, we could look back from Sinua across the valley to see Chhomrong perched on the hill opposite us.
After a nice lunch inside a guesthouse in Sinua, we started our afternoon trek with another uphill pull. As we climbed higher and the mountains closed in, we recognized a standard weather pattern. The mornings were clear and sunny. As the day heated up in the plains next to the Himalayan mountains, the hot air rose and started getting pushed into the mountains. As the hot air rises in the mountains it forms clouds in the afternoon, making for overcast and chilly conditions. Each day we had to layer off and layer on through the changing weather conditions of the day.
After our afternoon trek, we arrived in the village of Bamboo. Just past the village was a set of three terraces where our porters had pitched our tents and made camp. After dinner, most of our group retired to their tents by 7:30 pm. Dick, Karalee, and I played crib and visited with David and Nukhet, fellow sailors, until exhausted we fell into our tents at 9:00 pm.
